Sign Showdown

Eighteen signs go up at the Midland Soccer Club this Saturday, carrying five different messages. Only one of them will make a mid-Michigan business owner stop walking and pull out a phone. Rank the field before the first scan lands – it is scored like golf, so the low card wins.

Best possible: −16

You take one stroke for every place you are off. Put a message second that finishes fourth, that is two strokes. A card you nail exactly is zero.
Par is 8 a card. That is what a card of pure guesses averages, so it is the line worth beating. Both cards add up to a course par of 16 and the board shows you against it – −6, E, +2.
Ties go to a playoff on the total-scans number. Closest without going over. Everybody over is out of the playoff.
One card per person. Turn in a new one as often as you like until Friday at 5:00 p.m., after which it locks and the board goes public.
If two messages finish the season dead level on scans, the one with more contacts places higher. Still level, the earlier first scan wins.

Do not scan the signs

The whole season is expected to produce scans in the dozens, not hundreds. A dozen curious employees at the fields would swamp the result and we would learn nothing – and internal traffic is already the thing we are cleaning out of this property. Photograph the signs all you like. Leave the codes to the public.
